Bay of Plenty — NEW ZEALAND |

Chartered in 2005, the Rotary Club of Maketu is one of New Zealand’s newest and most dynamic Rotary clubs. The village of Maketu holds a central role in New Zealand history as the landing site of the Arawa canoe under the command of the great Maori navigator, Tamatekapua. It is one of the first human settlements in New Zealand. For over 700 years there has been a continuous community in Maketu. The Rotary Club of Maketu reflects the new face of Rotary. It spans the economic and cultural boundaries of a small (pop 1,000) rural community. The club membership is divided equally between men and women, and two-thirds of the members are couples.Maketu Rotary demonstrates that in every community, no matter the size, there are people who want to serve. |
